Parental Engagement Plan
Parental engagement is a vital component for a child to succeed as it extends learning outside of the classroom and into the home. Parents who are involved with their child’s schooling become active supporters and continue their role as their child’s first teacher. In order to ensure parents are given the opportunity to engage with their child’s education, I have created a parental engagement plan.

Communication
- A packet explaining the classroom rules and expectations will be given to parents at the beginning of the school year.
- Bi-weekly newsletters will be sent home to update the parents on what the class is doing.
- A weekly homework checklist will be sent out at the beginning of each week. It will outline the homework that’s being assigned and parents will be asked to sign off indicting that their child completed the task.
- Parent and teacher contact information will be exchanged at the beginning of the year. This allows parents to e-mail me or call me to address any concerns they may have. It is important to waste no time responding, therefore, I will do my best to get back to that parent within 24 hours.
- I will collaborate with other members of the school to translate all written and spoken material into that parent’s native language.
Involvement / Support
- Parents will be granted to opportunity to participate in field trips and other school events by being asked to chaperone.
- Parents will be encouraged to participate in all of the school events.
- I will hold meetings with the parents of my class to discuss upcoming events, testing (NYSESLAT and LAB-R), and any other pertinent news.
Input and Governance
- Parents will be encouraged to become a member of the PTA.
- Parents will be encouraged to collaborate with the other parents of ESOL students as a means for support.
Learning Opportunities
- I will inform parents of the various adult ESL programs available.
- When time allows, I will hold adult ESL classes for the parents.
- I will collaborate with school staff to organize a meeting for parents to attend, which will address the Deferment Act.
